Every year in April, Autism Speaks, an organization that aims to promote and provide solutions for the needs of individuals with autism and their families throughout their life span, celebrates World Autism Awareness Month. The observance begins with the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd. World Autism Month is based on the core ideals of uniting as a community and working together by encouraging worldwide support, sharing stories, and connecting to create a better and more inclusive world for those affected. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children in the United States today. Below are some methods you can engage in this Autism Awareness Month:
Random Acts of Kindness
Displaying Random Acts of Kindness can be extremely effective in creating a positive and welcoming society for those affected by autism. Autism is often characterized and associated with challenges in social communication/interaction both or either verbal or nonverbal communication, developing and maintaining relationships as well as social-emotional reciprocity. Taking action and initiative to help them feel more comfort in socializing can make significant differences in their lives.
Help Raise Funds and Give
As with most awareness campaigns, helping out with financial resources is critical to their success. Finding ways to donate and continue to help the growth of Autism awareness in the world can also make the grandest of differences in the lives of everyone involved. Check your local Facebook pages, Eventbrite and other community events for different fundraisers, walks and other activities you can get your family involved in this April.
Spread the Word
Another common method used for awareness campaigns is spreading the word to those around us to help make great impacts. Something as simple as mentioning autism awareness in conversation or using other communication channels such as social media, email, word of mouth and text messaging can be effective ways to spread more information regarding World Autism Awareness Month and autism itself!
Spreading kindness and love are essential ways to help make anyone feel more welcome to the society we live in. Individuals living with autism will enjoy and benefit from everything we do to show our support for them. This April, let’s continue to grow in our support for those affected by autism of all ages!
